Membership guidelines

Who can join, how admission works and what each membership category carries.

Categories

Life Member and Associate Member compared

The same labels are used for both categories so the rules can be read side by side.

Life Member

For qualified ophthalmic professionals working, practising or living in Jammu Province who are ratified by the general body.

Eligibility
Medical professionals with a basic MBBS degree followed by an allopathic ophthalmic qualification who work, practise or live in Jammu Province.
Admission
Submission of an application, payment of the life-membership fee applicable at the time, and ratification by the general body. Payment alone does not automatically confer membership or voting rights.
After ratification
Voting, contesting an office-bearer post and committee appointment, each subject to the eligibility criteria for that role.
Moving away
A Life Member who moves from Jammu and Kashmir and ceases to be a Jammu and Kashmir assembly voter may no longer vote, contest an office-bearer post or remain an office bearer. Wording awaiting JOS sign-off

Associate Member

For medical practitioners, allopathic postgraduate students of ophthalmology and ophthalmologists based outside Jammu Province.

Eligibility
Medical practitioners and allopathic postgraduate students of ophthalmology, as well as ophthalmologists practising, working or living outside Jammu Province.
Charges
Charges equivalent to the Life Membership charges current at the time. No amount is published here; contact JOS for the current charges. Contact JOS for current charges.
Rights
Associate ophthalmologists outside Jammu Province have no voting rights and cannot hold an office-bearer post.
Converting later
Postgraduate students may apply to become Life Members once they hold the required allopathic postgraduate ophthalmic qualification, by submitting the necessary application and documents. The guidelines state that no extra fee applies to that change. Wording awaiting JOS sign-off

How to join

From enquiry to ratification

Membership begins only after the general body ratifies an application. Paying a fee on its own does not confer membership or voting rights.

  1. Check your eligibility

    Confirm which category fits your qualification and where you practise or live.

  2. Ask JOS for the current fee and documents

    The life-membership fee and the document list are set by the society; both are available from the society office.

  3. Submit an application

    Send your application with the documents the society asks for.

  4. Wait for ratification

    Applications are placed before the general body. Membership and voting rights begin only after ratification.

  5. Receive confirmation

    The society office confirms the outcome. Until then, payment alone does not confer membership.

The following points are recorded here so the wording can be reviewed by the society before any formal rules document is published or offered as a download.

  • The Word guidelines add an explicit statement that a Life Member who moves from Jammu and Kashmir and ceases to be a J&K assembly voter may no longer vote, contest or remain an office bearer. The PDF states this less explicitly. The Word wording is used here and needs JOS sign-off before any legal-style rules document is published or downloaded.
  • The guidelines state that students admitted as Associate Members cannot hold an office-bearer post. Please confirm whether that restriction still applies after a student converts to Life Membership.
